Before choosing a plate, review its threat rating and make sure its size and weight fit your intended setup. Not every steel plate provides the same rifle-threat protection.

Plate size affects coverage and carrier compatibility. Front and rear steel plate carrier inserts should cover the vital organs in the upper torso without unnecessarily restricting movement. Compact hard armor inserts and side plates can expand coverage in compatible carriers.

Protective coatings also matter. Polyurea coatings on applicable steel ballistic plates help protect the steel core from moisture and abrasion and are designed to help mitigate fragmentation and spall. Review model-specific coating features when comparing special-threat armor plates.

“Level III+” is an industry-used special-threat designation, not a formal NIJ 0101.07 category. Under the newer NIJ nomenclature, RF1 replaces the previous Level III designation. RF2 is a new intermediate rifle level that includes the RF1 threats plus M855, while RF3 replaces the previous Level IV designation. Level III+ steel plates should be evaluated by their specific tested threats rather than treated as automatically RF2.

Selecting steel or ceramic armor depends on threat requirements, weight, and budget. Steel armor is valued for accessible pricing and potentially long service life when maintained according to manufacturer guidance. Steel rifle plates can provide cost-effective rifle protection.

Steel is generally heavier than many ceramic plates designed for comparable rifle threats, which can affect mobility during extended periods of use. Ceramic armor can reduce carried weight and is available for RF2 and RF3 threats. It generally presents lower ricochet and secondary-fragmentation concerns than uncoated steel armor.
