Dumas PD’s Investment in Rifle-Rated Armor & Ballistic Shields Sets an Example for Departments Nationwide
When it comes to protecting those who protect us, having the right equipment can make all the difference.
That’s why we were inspired by the recent story of the Dumas Police Department in Texas, a shining example of how agencies are stepping up to ensure their officers are prepared for today’s threats.
In September 2024, after months of planning and applying, Dumas PD was awarded two state grants: one for rifle-rated armor and another for ballistic shields. The department had applied earlier that summer, recognizing an urgent need for enhanced protection on the job.
The officers received the following RTS Tactical Shields:

- RTS Tactical Level III+ Rifle Special Threats Mini Shield
“In Texas, everybody has a gun, and especially in this area, everybody has a rifle,” said Administrative Lieutenant Tommy Gonzales. “There have been numerous incidents where we’ve needed these shields, but the ones we had didn’t provide the level of protection we needed to get the job done.”
For officers responding to unpredictable and high-risk calls, this equipment is more than a financial investment, it’s a lifeline.
“You never know what kind of call or situation you’re going to face,” said Officer Brady Williams. “You don’t know what weapons people have. Having this equipment gives us an extra layer of safety and peace of mind.”
Officer Horacio Maldonado added, “You go into high-risk situations knowing that you’re a little more safe now. The shields cover all the important parts and give us the coverage we need.”
The new equipment is now being actively integrated into training, with Dumas PD officers partnering with the Amarillo Police Department to gain hands-on experience.
The goal? Ensuring that every Dumas officer and detective has access to advanced protection for a wide range of threats.
